Shrink Wrap 101

Shrink Wrap Process

FOUR STAGES OF THE SHRINK WRAP PROCESS...

1) The Shrink Wrapping machine may automatically collate individual items (bottles, cans, cartons, etc.). The multipack is ready to be wrapped unsupported, pad-supported, or tray-supported.

2) The collated product is loosely enveloped in shrink film.

3) The wrapped bundles then pass through a heated shrink tunnel, causing the film to shrink tightly and neatly around the pack.

4) The shrink wrapped products exit the shrink tunnel, cool and they are ready for handling.

Shrink Wrap 001

Two-Roll Seal Bar

Two rolls of flat film are mounted on the machine; one above and one below. The ends are welded together to form a curtain. As the package moves through the curtain, the sealbars close behind the package and form a sleeve. The sealbar cuts/separates the sleeve and reforms the curtain for the next package.

Shrink Wrap 002

Bottom Overlap

A single roll of film is mounted on the machine, which then metes out the proper length needed to wrap the package. As the package touches the front end of the cut film, a flightbar lifts the back end of the cut film and carries it over the top, tucking the trailing edge underneath the package. The wrapped package then passes into the heated shrink tunnel.

Shrink Wrap 003

Horizontal Wrapping/Form-Fill-Seal

A single roll of shrink film is mounted on the machine and the film is formed around a forming "plow" or mandrel. During the wrapping process the product is fed through the forming plow. The front end of the package pulls the film along as it emerges from the forming "plow," thus creating a tube. The front and back of the tube are both sealed and the wrapped product then passes into the heated shrink tunnel.
NOTE: Machinery which uses this method of wrapping is located in the horizontal wrapping category.
